You might hate me for being the Israeli nationalist I am (A zionist, basically), but this is not the place for any arguements and you're that kind of person who likes to read historical fictions (have you read Child 44?) so you're fine by me.

I'll hate the politics, but not necessarily you, my friend! If you know Burrowfield, you'd know we're polar opposites politically yet I still consider him a friend. I haven't! I've been meaning to, though I find the whole "There can be no crime in the USSR, we're perfect!" thing to be ridiculous because like...the USSR never claimed that. That's part of the whole Red Scare Myth, saying we've done things we never actually did and said things we've never said. For example, no, we do not want to pay doctors the same as janitors ;)

Both of my parents came from the USSR (Republic of Komi and Uzbekistan), there are certain things that they told me that are complete lies told by the west, for example; that the Soviet Union depressed artistic minds and that whole topic was forbidden (once again, this is something that I was told in my history class - I think that the teacher got a hardon from Orwell's book). Anyhow, it's a great book and I recommend reading it, it's worth a shot and I enjoyed every moment in it... it's also quite educational and you learn a thing or two about the USSR at those times.
